From CooKoo Clock to Bicycle

Nick and I always plan way ahead for our annivesary, I’m not sure why but whenever May comes around we start thinking about it.  This year we decided we’d get ourselves a joint gift and had decided upon a cookoo clock.  Do you know how expensive those are? Well we went to one clock shop and came to a number of conclusions 1) you can’t buy a cookoo clock off the internet sight unseen, as we had seen several of the models on the internet and really liked them, but when we saw them in person we were not impressed at all; and 2) to purchase a clock we really really liked, we’d have to spend around $2,000!  Leaving the shop a little disheartened we went to Walmart to pick up some necessities of life, paper towels.  While wandering through the store we passed the bike rack.  We both stopped and looked.  And looked at each other and said bicycles.  So right then and there we decided that 1) instead of waiting till AUgust we’d purchase our anniversary present sooner then later, and 2) we’d purchase bicycles instead of a cookoo clock.  It would be a much, much better investment in our health.

Nick and I both need to lose a significant amount of weight, and we bth need to be more active.  And we do enjoy bike riding together, but our current bikes are in horrible condition.  So we started looking around at different bike shops, we went to 3 plus 5 “sports” stores.  We ended up buying a pair of Fuji Crosstown 2.0 Hybrid Bicycles (Hybrid as a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike).  We pick them up on Saturday.

The down side is, our much more active lifestyle will mean much less time in front of the TV knitting.  Thus the in-laws bedspread, may now be a 45th wedding anniversary present.  BUt that is OKAY! I have to become more active, and we both really like bike riding, and we have great bike trails all around our county, one that comes practically to our door.

We’ve also been getting the dogs out on the trails and walking them which they really enjoy.

Although our wolf dog, is looking a tad rabid in this picture! Which was actually taken in January, obviously.

So I’d better get back to dreaming about my new bike.

    What a great idea!

Better bicycling than sitting in front of the TV but I’m sure there will still be enough of that! Great anniversary gifts! My mother brought back a cuckoo clock from Europe. I hates it. So noisy. I’d steal it off the wall and send it to you, but I think she’d notice. 😉

  4. Jeanne says:

Great idea – we are trying to be more active too and the dogs like that!

  5. Sydney says:

Great choice! Doing something for fun and health is the perfect anniversary gift.

While I think a cookoo clock is cute, bicycle is a much better choice to me. Congratulations on the new bikes! It’s true that while you start being more active, time for knitting would decrease … but that’s one price to pay for getting active but it is a fair price. 🙂

Congrats on the new bikes! Did you know that this is national bike-to-work week?? And the official bike to work day is Friday. I’m really hoping to be able to do it this year. I hope it doesn’t rain. I know you live further from work than I do – I only work about 7 miles away from home, and I have even scoped out a mostly residential route.
We put the bike rack on the car on Saturday for the first time – we bought the rack at the end of the season last year. We live about 1.5 miles from the Grant’s Farm trail, and Christopher wanted to drive to the trailhead. The trail is a reclaimed railroad bed, so it is pretty flat. The route to the trailhead, however, is quite hilly! After 15 miles of biking on the trail, those two big hills on the way home are killers.
My mother-in-law also bought a cookoo clock in Germany, and my sister says they have seen tons of them for sale from various vendors, even on the military base. Apparently parts and maintenance can be an issue too – my in-laws had to send theirs somewhere for work. You will be so much happier with the bikes!!! For Mother’s Day, I got a bike “computer” that is an odometer and a speedometer too. Christopher has one. I recommend NOT getting them because my husband sets goals, like maintaining a speed of 15mph, without mentioning the goal to me. I’m not a 15mph biker. I’d rather check out people’s landscaping and gardens as I bike along the trail.

I just checked out your bikes – I also have a hybrid and they call it a “comfort” bike. I think ours are pretty similar. Mine is a few years old – a Marin Redwood. It is probably a 2004 or 2005.

My friend bought me a book of cycling routes in STL. Wanna meet and do the Chain of Rocks bridge sometime? I really want to do that. And the KATY trail too! 🙂

Very cool bike! I have a very neglected one that I need to get on more often. I LIVED on my bike when I was a kid.

Who knew cookoo clocks were so expensive?!

  10. Lorraine says:

Rebekah- My grandmother was German, and they had a cuckoo clock. It was kind of loud.

I’d much prefer a bike- great idea.

  11. Jennifer says:

What a wonderful way to celebrate your anniversary!

Thanks, we thought so too. (if I already responded to this, sorry, for some reason when I use webmail, it doesn’t show me what I answered when it comes back to my home computer.)

Sounds like a good plan. Happy pedalling.
